I’m not very strict with any spread rules your whole practice is up to you. Just decide _before_ you pull cards so you don’t change the meaning on yourself later.

If you’re seeing weird results, I would take a break for a day or two and come back with a fresh head.

have you tried shuffling between each card? when the energies feel blurred it might be because you’re pulling from one continuous moment instead of three separate ones. i usually draw a card, hold it for a sec, then shuffle again before the next one. helps create some separation between past, present, and future readings.

For me, there isn’t one correct way to read. I tend to go by feel.

Fixed positions (past or future) can give structure. I use them when I need focus, and I drop them when they’re getting in the way. If a card in slot 5 is clearly pointing somewhere else, I follow that lead. I treat the spread like a conversation and let the cards cut in when they need to. That’s just my approach, and it changes depending on the day.

I let the cards speak however they want when I pull three. Could be past/present/future, could be three parts of the same energy, or they might be talking to each other.

I prefer letting them flow into one story instead of boxing them into rigid spots. I’ll lay them out and watch what happens; each card adds its voice, but they blend together rather than taking turns. This approach feels more real to me. Why limit what the cards are trying to say by giving them assigned roles?

I just go with what feels right in the moment.

timing can mess with how cards show up in PPF spreads. What works for me is doing a quick grounding thing first. I picture myself as a tree (roots going down for the past, trunk for now, branches up for the future. Helps the cards settle into the right spots.

I noticed this with my garden last winter. Some bulbs started blooming during a warm spell in January. Same thing happens with Death in tarot readings. It shows up in present positions because big changes don’t wait for the future slot. They’re already happening whether we’re ready or not.

My sister and I came up with a way to handle timeline spreads that actually works. We physically separate the deck into three piles labeled Past/Now/Next before we even start drawing. Then we have this rule where Major cards get a Minor card placed underneath to show the timing.

Like when Death came up in her Future position last week, we pulled the 6 of Pentacles to go under it. That told us the financial rebalancing part of her big change wasn’t happening yet, just the internal shift was current. Been doing readings this way for about six months now.

Makes it way easier to tell what’s actually happening when versus what’s coming up.

I’ve been looking at the bottom card when the timeline feels scrambled. Sometimes it hints at why everything piles up at once; other times it doesn’t add much.

I stick to present-moment readings with my 3-card spreads. None of that past-present, future stuff for me.

My go-to is usually: what’s going on now, what’s beneath the surface, and practical next steps. People seem to connect better when we focus on their current situation rather than jumping around in time.

Friend of mine says if the cards keep sliding around, give the deck three taps on wood to ‘reset the timeline.’ I rolled my eyes the first time. Later I saw it help a few spreads. Might just be the shuffle getting back on track.

So many different ways to do a 3-card spread. Kind of depends on what you’re trying to figure out I guess.

The Past/Present/Future spread has always been tricky for me because life doesn’t fit into neat boxes. Everything kind of bleeds together, past stuff still affects me now, and what I’m doing today is already shaping tomorrow. Death card in the future while you’re already transforming? I’ve had similar pulls.

The spread seems to show more about how time connects than about keeping things separate. I started reading it more like a flow chart than three distinct moments. Past influences, present energy, future direction, all part of the same stream rather than isolated events.

Have you tried a reading layout like this one?

> After decades of reading Tarot, writing guides and posting at least 100+ tarot spread breakdowns, I think the three-card Tarot spread is probably the most commonly used. Easy enough for beginners, yet nuanced enough for an experienced reader to combine cards and positions to get a real message. It’s quick and flexible for just about any question, giving you enough to work with without turning into an hour-long production. When someone asks for a good place to start, this is usually what I sugge…

I hear what you’re saying about intention, but I’ve had some good readings just throwing cards without a question. Sometimes when we’re too rigid with spreads and intentions, we can box the cards in.

When I just pick up the deck out of curiosity, the cards show me stuff I didn’t even know I needed to see. Those random three-card pulls you mentioned have given me some pretty clear messages. Structured spreads are good, especially when you’re starting out. But sometimes I think it’s worth just letting the cards do their thing

Like talking with an old friend who knows what’s going on with you.

I see where everyone’s coming from, but I’d push back a bit on the idea that you _must_ assign positions before pulling cards. Some readers work intuitively and let the cards reveal their own structure. Sometimes the deck speaks clearest when you’re not forcing it into a framework you created before you even knew what message was coming through.
