The Jack of Spades is one of the ‘one-eyed Jacks’ in a standard deck - shown in profile, only one eye visible. In folk cartomancy, the one-eyed cards were called ‘thieves’ in card games going back to the 1600s, and that visual symbolism bled directly into divinatory meanings.
