I’ve been working with both runes and tarot for a while now.
I think (just my experience YMMV) that runes tend to give me more fluid, open-ended messages compared to the structured meanings in tarot. Like when I pull Fehu, it might speak to material wealth one day and spiritual abundance the next, depending on what’s happening in my life. With my favorite deck (the Wild Unknown), the meanings feel more fixed - the Ten of Pentacles is always about legacy and family wealth (for example). And there was that great guide just posted yesterday about cards that mean money - these are set. Fixed messages.
I started mapping correspondences between my rune set and tarot cards, which has been interesting. For example, I associate Ansuz with The Hierophant, and Gebo with the Two of Cups. This helps me layer meanings when I do combined readings.
As for rune tarot decks, I haven’t found one that really captures the raw, primal energy of casting actual stones. There’s something about the tactile experience of reaching into a pouch and feeling for the right rune that cards can’t replicate. But I do sometimes pull a rune alongside my card spreads for extra insight - it’s like getting a direct message from the universe to clarify or deepen the tarot’s guidance.
I think if you gave either system enough time you’d probably get to the same place but I think Tarot is a lot more documented and developed so you could probably get deeper meanings with less work with the cards rather than stones.
