Shadow Work Tarot Tips?

I’ve been doing tarot with moon phases for about a year and it’ll transform how you see the cards (and yourself).

During new moons, I dig into the hidden stuff, you know, all those parts we don’t want to look at. Been working on accepting my perfectionist side instead of constantly fighting it. The cards don’t sugarcoat anything either. Full moons feel like the universe giving us permission to let go of heavy stuff. Makes sense why everyone gets so emotional then, we’re literally being pulled to release things!

My favorite spread goes like this:

  • First card: Where I’m at right now in this area

  • Second card: (New moon) What shadow needs attention? OR (Full moon) What am I ready to drop?

  • Third card: What’s possible if I do the work

When I get stuck interpreting (which always happens no matter how experienced you are), I throw in astrology stuff. Like if my 7th house card is confusing, I think about relationships, Venus vibes, that kind of thing. Really helps build the full picture. I also do this ‘above and below’ thing: Bottom 3 cards = shadow stuff Top 3 cards = how to heal it.

Sometimes I add one more on top for the transformation waiting for me. The same cards keep showing up month after month. Kind of like they’re saying ‘hey, you still haven’t dealt with this!’

..…as I wrap up my self-reading over here……

The deck definetley matters for me. The art can add or change how a meaning lands. My first Tarot deck was the Edgar Allen Poe tarot by Rose Wright and Eugene Smith. It was really hard to connect the traditional meanings to the cards because of the dark themes and aesthetic of the deck. On top of that I was pulling nothing but revered cards so I was totally lost on the meaning of the cards. I started over with RWS deck, took it on card at a time til I undertaken the traditional meanings and made personal connections to the cards. I then realized the Egar Allen Poe deck wanted to be a shadow work deck. I might have guessed by the themes of Edgar Allen Poe works. The devil is even depicted in the 10 of cups in that deck. It totally add shadow aspects to the meanings I find in the cards.
