The best intro to tarot’s origins I’ve come across. Helen Farley’s A Cultural History of Tarot covers the early Italian playing cards, how the esoteric associations developed over centuries, all of it.
It’s thorough but still readable, which is rare for this kind of deep-dive. Good luck finding a copy though.
