The Tarot is very freeing and flexible, and there’s no real “best” question you can ask since it’s very specific and unique to you and the moment, but I do have some suggestions for those who don’t know what questions to ask or how to phrase their question.
Instead of asking “What do I need to know?”… try getting to the core of the situation’s energy and your role in it.
What perspective am I missing?
What is my highest self trying to tell me?
What lesson is this teaching me?
Where is my blind spot right now?
What truth is this situation reflecting?
How am I contributing to this dynamic?
What needs to shift in my awareness?

What shadow aspect needs integration?

What intuitive message have I ignored?
Navigating Crossroads & Decisions
Instead of “Which should I choose?”, explore the potential and purpose of each path.
What will Path A teach me?
What will Path B teach me?

Action & Empowerment
Focus on aligned actions and personal agency, not just a to-do list.
What’s my most aligned next step?
What energy should I embody?
What needs releasing first?
How can I best support myself?
What small action creates momentum?
Where is my power right now?
What strength am I not using?

Understanding Relationships
For exploring the dynamics between you and another person.
What’s the energetic dynamic between us?
What is this relationship teaching me?

How can I heal this connection?
What’s my role versus theirs?
What am I projecting onto them?
Where do we mirror each other?
Embracing Blessings & Gratitude

What blessing am I overlooking?
How can I receive more fully?
What’s ready to blossom?
Where’s the unexpected magic?
What strength am I underestimating?
What abundance already surrounds me?
How is the universe supporting me now?
I hope these ideas help someone and please feel free to sharing your own suggestions!
You guys are overcomplicating this. I get it, we all like to overthink these things sometimes. I’ve been doing something different lately - I ask the opposite of what I want to know.
So instead of ‘How do I move forward?’ I’ll ask ‘How can I stay stuck?’
The cards basically show me everything I shouldn’t do, which ends up being pretty useful. Plus, it’s kind of funny seeing them lay out all the ways I’m sabotaging myself.
I’ve seen the same thing, everyone wants to know about love and work. The ‘what are they thinking’ questions were super common. The interesting part was when people started asking different questions.
Instead of just wanting to know if someone loved them, they’d ask about dealing with the situation. The cards seemed to give better answers that way.
Your list really shows how questions can focus more on what we can actually do instead of just waiting around for other people to make decisions.
I’ve been doing something similar, asking the cards to tell me a story about whatever I’m curious about. Like ‘tell me a story about my hidden strength’ or ‘tell me a story about this crossroads.’
It turns the reading into more of a narrative thing instead of just Q&A. I’ve been using this approach a lot lately when I want to read differently, and it works well with most question types by turning them into story prompts.
They dig deeper than the usual yes/no stuff and actually get at what the cards might be showing you. The way they’re sorted by theme is handy, making it easier to pick what fits your situation.
I’ve been trying some of these lately instead of my usual questions. Like switching from ‘What should I do?’ to ‘What perspective am I missing?’ gives you different answers.
These questions are good, but I wonder if we sometimes overthink this stuff.
Sticking too hard to any question format can block what wants to come through. Some of my best readings happened when I just laid cards with no question at all. I let the images speak first, then figured out what the spread was trying to tell me.
The cards often know what we need to look at before we do. These prompts might help beginners though.
I used to be that person who kept pulling cards until I got the answer I wanted. The worst thing to do as a Tarot reader… but a hard habit to break.
At least it was for me.
Now I usually asking harder questions like ‘What happens if nothing changes?’
The court cards show up like different parts of my brain arguing, Page of Swords analyzing everything to death, Queen of Cups wanting me to take it easy on myself. Started adding a body check-in card because I was confusing anxiety with intuition.
Asking the same thing every new moon helps me see what’s actually shifting versus what I’m just telling myself is different. My favorite pull now is the ‘stop overthinking and do something’ card.
These prompts are really helpful. Not just for beginners, sometimes I think coming at a spread with a fresh idea of question perspective can help even experienced readers approach a topic better.
We could probably benefit from pinning a big list like this for people to use more often.
I like how they focus on getting actual insights from the cards instead of just trying to predict what’s going to happen. The questions encourage you to have a real conversation with your deck instead of expecting it to tell your future. Each one helps you look inward and take ownership of your situation, which feels way more useful than asking ‘will this work out?’
I also appreciate how flexible these questions are. You can adjust them for whatever you’re dealing with - work stuff, relationship issues, whatever - while still keeping that self-reflective element. The cards work best when they help us see things we kind of already knew but hadn’t fully admitted to ourselves.
I’ve been trying time-based questions lately, like ‘How will others perceive my energy this week?’ and ‘What does my future self want current me to know?’
They give me different perspectives than my usual daily pulls. The downside is the answers can be all over the place. Sometimes, I get practical stuff about upcoming events, other times it’s heavy emotional work that needs attention. It can be a lot to process. I also ask things like ‘What is my higher self trying to communicate?’ Works well with the self-awareness questions you already have.
Feels more direct somehow. Your list plus these time questions help when I’m stuck in the same reading patterns.
Appreciate this list. I think a lot of people could get some use out of this and I love how you have different approaches to things.
My go-to lately is: ‘What message does the Universe need me to receive right now?’ Specific prompts sometimes box me in, so I use this. It lines up with your self-awareness section.
When I trust what shows up instead of overthinking the meanings, the reading feels clearer. If you’re overwhelmed by picking the “perfect” question, try this and see what comes through.
Still struggle with questions sometimes, and I feel like I’ve been doing this a while, and often help other people phrase their questions.
I’ve got these two things I use as a check, consent and evidence. When it’s about someone else, I ask myself what’s actually okay to do here. Then I write down what I’d see in real life if I’m on the right track, like proof that it’s working. Keeps me honest.
nd yeah, the cards don’t owe me answers to everything.
At parties, people always ask me stuff like ‘What’s my ex thinking?’ or ‘Will I get that promotion?’
The specific timeline questions are tough because cards work better with open-ended questions like the ones you listed. Those give you more to work with in a reading instead of just yes/no answers.
I wish I had more clients who knew to ask the Tarot questions like this!
