Been falling down the indie tarot deck rabbit hole lately. What gets me is how they just… throw the rulebook out the window? Like The Wild Unknown deck, barely any traditional imagery, but somehow it reads deeper than my RWS. That minimalist style opened up this whole intuitive space I didn’t know existed.
Now I’m hunting for more decks with that raw, unpolished energy. You know what I mean? Where you can feel the creator’s soul in every card instead of that corporate polish. The personal magic that mainstream publishers would probably focus-group to death.

There’s a pretty big Instagram page that reviews only Indie decks but I can’t seem to find it… Someone linked it just this week somewhere on here.
If you’re looking Indy… you probably won’t find them on the most popular list. They’re usually a lot smaller. Etsy has a lot, but the quality is questionable, and plenty of scammy ones are around.
Just found the Magic Pantry Tarot - it has that indie vibe you mentioned. The artist did something interesting with the court cards, turned them into cooking utensils with personalities. Pretty unique take on traditional tarot imagery.
My biggest frustration with indie decks? Zero reversal guidance in their guidebooks!
The Wooden Tarot literally just says ‘use your intuition’ for ALL the reversals. Come on, at least give me the creator’s perspective on shadow meanings.

I’ve been checking out some really interesting decks lately.
The Marea Tarot and Mary-El Tarot (First Edition) both have great symbolism, some artwork just clicks with you. For darker aesthetics, there’s The Gill Tarot, R. Black Tarot, and Dark Mansion Tarot. The first two are out of print now though, which is frustrating.
Oracle wise, the Roots and Wings Oracle and Supra Oracle are worth looking at. The L’Oracle Bleu is another good one but also OOP. The Shimmering Veil Tarot might be out of print too (not sure), but The Liminal Tarot is still available digitally even though the physical deck is OOP.
Dream Visions Tarot and Little Sister Tarot are also solid picks. Anyone worked with these decks?
Found this indie tarot deck on Kickstarter a while back that came with something different.
The artist made a digital guidebook you could use on your phone or computer. It had interpretations for each card, plus meditation exercises and audio guides. Pretty cool way to learn the deck. Made me feel more connected to it than just reading a paper booklet.
I’ve been looking into indie decks lately that have extra cards beyond the standard 78. Some artists add their own unique cards to the major or minor arcana. Been curious how these extra cards work in actual readings.
Came across The Becoming Tarot and Baroque Tarot the other day.
One’s got anime art and the other looks like it came straight from a museum. Kind of interesting that two decks can look so different but still tap into the same symbolism. The visual styles couldn’t be more opposite but somehow they both work.
Been checking out some indie decks lately, the Pulp Tarot, Tarot of Oneness, Art of Adventure, and Kei Love.
It’s cool how everyone connects with different art styles. Makes me think the decks we pick might show where we’re at just as much as the actual readings. What decks have you been looking at? I like hearing what draws people to certain imagery. Sometimes the deck you think you’ll love ends up being different from the one that actually clicks when you get it in your hands.
Just got the Bon Sequitur deck and it’s actually really well made.
I was expecting something more DIY-looking since it’s indie. The style is hard to describe. Kind of like if playing cards met album art from the 90s. Bright colors everywhere but it somehow works.
I started with the Gentle Tarot myself. The artwork is really soft and not intimidating at all, which helped when I was learning. The Ink Witch Tarot is gorgeous too (the mystical artwork is what drew me in. I’ve also been eyeing the Tarot of Trees since I’m into nature stuff and the symbolism seems like it would click for me.
