Last Unicorn Tarot Deck

So my Last Unicorn deck arrived yesterday, and it has two Lovers cards in the deck, which is probably meaningful.

I’ve been waiting for this deck FOREVER (backed it on Kickstarter back in 2017, what a journey that was with all the delays). But honestly? Worth every minute of the wait.

First impressions… this thing is SUBSTANTIAL. The cards are thicker than usual (feels like 350 GSM or more) with this gorgeous rose-petal finish and gold gilding on the edges. They’re a bit bigger than standard tarot size and have this lovely weight to them. The gold accents on front and back catch the light beautifully without feeling overdone.

The artwork is absolutely stunning. I was worried about having multiple artists working on it, but the style is surprisingly cohesive throughout. The Major Arcana choices are chef’s kiss - Schmendrick as The Fool, Lady Amalthea as High Priestess, King Haggard as The Emperor… whoever made these decisions really understood the story.

About those two Lovers cards - yeah, they included an alternative version that was apparently controversial during development. I can see why they went with both options honestly. The main one feels more true to the story’s themes.

The whole package is beautiful too - came with enamel pins (the Red Bull one is particularly striking), vinyl stickers, and this carved wooden box that was a stretch goal. The guidebook is faux leather with actual good interpretations, not just generic meanings with character names slapped on.

Only minor complaint is they’re a bit stiff to shuffle due to the thickness, but that’ll probably improve with use.

If you’re a Last Unicorn fan, this is absolutely essential. Even if you’re not super familiar with the source material, the artwork alone makes it worthwhile. The imagery connects really well to traditional RWS meanings once you understand the context.

Anyone else get theirs yet? Curious what others think of the card choices!

These are definitely going in my collection! So excited! If you’re picking them up too, I highly recommend pairing them with Mary K. Greer’s ‘Tarot for Your Self’ - it has some amazing exercises that really help you connect with a new deck. Can’t wait to start working with these beauties!

Just did my first Celtic Cross with this deck last week and wow, they read like a dream despite the thickness. Though I must say, having Mommy Fortuna as the Devil made me laugh, talk about being bound by your own illusions! The deck really unicorns its way into your heart.

While having two Lovers cards offers beautiful intuitive possibilities, it can sometimes muddy the waters during relationship readings. There’s actually a cool approach to working with duplicate cards in narrative decks that helps maintain clarity while honoring both versions’ unique energies.

What really sealed the deal for me was discovering that buying this deck actually supports Peter S. Beagle directly, knowing my purchase helps the original creator makes each reading feel even more meaningful.

If you’re thinking about getting this deck, give it a try, there’s something special about working with cards that have such a direct connection to their source.

I don’t know if I’ve ever reviewed a deck before but I love this one so much.

There’s such an intense collective energy around this deck. The fact that it’s become so sought-after demonstrates how certain decks just know when their time has come to find their people.

It’s also just cute

The energy between the two cards is fantastic. The deck is pretty, but it can reveal such stark differences in a single reading. This kind of contrast often points to an important choice or balance we need to find in our lives.

I’m loving the energy around this deck. It’s beautiful and it means a lot to some people and a deep connection to the theme of a deck can be important. I love everything about this.

I think they’re actually licensed as well. A lot of these kinds of decks are ripping off from the original IP and that has some bad vibes to me.

This deck is actually supporting the creator, so I think that adds something to it somehow.

I’ve heard they’re a little big and stiff compared to your average deck but that might just make them more durable. You could always use a little oil to soften them if you needed to.

Having two Lovers cards actually makes so much sense for intuitive reading, I always pull whichever one my hand gravitates toward and let the energy of the moment decide rather than worrying about which is the ‘official’ version.

Story-driven decks like this can be tricky, I always knock on my deck box three times before using a new narrative deck (old reader’s habit to ‘wake up’ the story spirits!), but even then, jumping between story moments instead of traditional card progressions can feel like reading a book with shuffled chapters. Beautiful as this deck is, I’d probably suggest newcomers start with something more traditionally structured before diving into Beagle’s world.

Those are gorgeous! Though sometimes the most beautiful decks aren’t always the ones that speak to us most clearly.

Beginners should start with a more traditional Rider-Waite, Smith deck first though I think. Something like this is maybe for experienced readers. I know they’re not as visually stunning, but there’s something to be said for learning the foundational symbolism before branching into artistic interpretations.

That said, if these cards are calling to you, that intuitive pull might be more important than following the ‘traditional’ path.
