Leonora Carrington Tarot Deck Thoughts?

Just saw that Fulghur has restocked both the Leonora Carrington tarot book and the Ithell Colquhoun deck - what incredible timing! As someone deeply fascinated by the surrealist connection to tarot, these pieces represent such an important bridge between artistic movements and divinatory practice.

Yes, they’re definitely an investment, but considering what resellers have been asking, this feels like a rare opportunity to own these historically significant works directly from the publisher. May your intuition lead you to the decks that speak most powerfully to your soul!

I don’t even think most people know what this is, it’s pretty die-hard Tarot, but I’m glad I’m not the only one. It’s so hard to find in stock anywhere, but every die-hard collector wants this on the shelf.

I wouldn’t personally try to use this as a reading for anyone else. I think the imagery might be a little too intense for a beginner, but I 100% want it as a collector.

Always out of stock. I have an order in with my local store that if they ever get a copy they’ll give me a call but it’s been 5+ years.

My partner thinks I have a problem. But if collecting tarot decks is wrong, I don’t want to be right! The Carrington would be deck #47. Or 48? I lost count after my shelf collapsed last year.

The thing about Carrington’s tarot work? She was making this amazing stuff in Mexico City for DECADES and nobody really paid attention.

It’s like she was literally The Hermit - doing her thing in Roma district while the art world slept. Then at 84, everyone’s like ‘oh wait, this is genius.’ Better late than never, I guess.

Her Fool card is something else. Pull that one and you might start thinking about who the real fools were. Probably all of us who missed out on her work for so long.

Snagged it! Thank you! I’m such a sucker for illustrated decks. RIP my bank account lol but I’m excited to see how the artwork looks in person. Been wanting to try some new spreads anyway so this is perfect timing.

Fulghur tends to restock every few months, though the timing isn’t always consistent. If you want to make sure you catch it, you might want to set up an email alert or join a notification list. This will help you snag one as soon as they’re back.

Can we talk about how publishers keep these incredible pieces hidden away for ages and then act shocked when the secondhand market explodes?

It’s so annoying watching scalpers sell spiritual tools for way more than they’re worth, while true fans who respect Carrington’s art get left out. At least Fulghur seems to get it; making these available again feels like the right thing to do. Her techniques deserve to be used and enjoyed, not just stored away, collecting dust.

I’ve been eyeing her deck for ages. My cats are always drawn to her artwork when I browse online-they know good divination stuff! This is perfect timing since my little crew and I are ready for a new deck. Can’t wait to place my order.

anyone read the book that comes with it? the essays about carrington’s alchemical symbolism are insane. seriously worth checking out even if you’re on the fence about the deck

Fair warning for beginners, this deck is pretty wild compared to traditional ones.

Carrington’s surrealist style means the images are really abstract and can be hard to interpret when you’re starting. That said, it’s a cool experience once you get into it. A guidebook or tarot app helps a ton with understanding the symbolism, especially in the beginning.

just so you know, these cards are way bigger than normal tarot decks. tiny hands = shuffling nightmare. i’ve already dropped them twice wasn’t showing The Tower at least, otherwise i’d be paranoid about what that means haha btw don’t leave them by windows ) direct sun will wreck the colors crazy fast. learned that the hard way with my last deck

I was in this Mexico City market once, super dusty, and saw someone reading Carrington’s tarot cards. That’s when it clicked - why she lived there for so long.

Her deck is huge in Mexico. Not as some fancy art thing, but as something people actually use and believe in. The local readers have added so much to it. They’ve layered on all this Mexican mysticism and meaning that goes way beyond what she originally painted.

It’s pretty cool how her European surrealist style ended up fitting perfectly with Mexican spiritual stuff. Like she planned it or something.

The Major Arcana totally blew my mind. They’re like windows into dreams. Her Fool is wild, instead of stepping off a cliff, it looks like they’re hatching from an egg. Really changes how you see the path starting.

Edit: The court cards are amazing too. They feel way more like spirit guides than the usual king/queen stuff. The Queens especially, they all look like they’re chatting with ghosts or something.

When I first opened the Carrington deck, I was honestly blown away. Her mystical beings and creatures feel like they’ve always belonged in tarot, you can tell she’s been into the occult forever and it just flows through these cards. The colors are what really get me. She takes the cards you think you know and completely flips them on their head. Makes you look at everything differently.

so my mentor got me into creating custom spreads for artsy decks like carrington’s. i do this 3-card thing now, past dream, present reality, future vision. way better than trying to make the surrealist stuff fit into traditional positions. funny thing is, once you work with it enough, the deck basically tells you what it needs.

The Carrington deck really gets under your skin in the best way. When I first started using it, all those weird hybrid creatures and dreamlike images brought up stuff I’d buried pretty deep.

If you’re not sure about spending the money, maybe check out the images in the book first. The deck has this crazy surrealist vibe that makes you forget about traditional meanings. I’ve been pairing it with automatic writing and getting some pretty intense insights.

So I pulled the Two of Pentacles this morning, and then boom - saw the restock announcement. The timing couldn’t be better.

love when tarot and art history cross paths! always fun to find out which old masters were into the cards and all that mystical stuff. thanks for sharing this
