Someone wants to book a phone tarot reading with me, but I’m nervous about not being face-to-face. Always done in-person readings where I can see their reactions and feel the energy in the room.
Part of me thinks just hearing their voice might actually help me focus better on the cards. No visual distractions, just their questions and my deck.
Has anyone done phone tarot readings? Do you still feel connected to the person? Worried the distance will mess with the accuracy, but maybe I’m overthinking it.

Phone readings are pretty much the same thing as online and there are a few things you can do to sort of bridge that gap.
My mentor taught me to pull a ‘bridge card’ before phone readings, a single card that represents the energetic connection between you and the querent across the distance. She swore by this technique after years of struggling with the same doubts you’re having, and it completely transformed how she approached remote readings. The card becomes like an anchor that helps you tune into their energy field, almost like the phone line becomes a silver cord connecting your intuitive channels.
Cards don’t stop working just because there’s a screen or phone between you and the reader! Some readers are amazing at picking up your energy whether you’re in the same room or halfway across the world.
Others do better with that in-person vibe. I mean, if the universe can send messages through random pieces of cardboard, distance probably isn’t that big of a deal. The right reader will connect with your energy either way. Technology’s just another tool, you know? Video chat, phone, in person, whatever works for you and your reader.
One thing nobody’s brought up, technical issues. Dropped calls, spotty signal, all that stuff can really throw you off. It happens to everyone though.
Just have a plan B ready. If things go wrong, shoot them an email to reschedule. Shows you’re on top of things and keeps everything professional.
Check out ‘The Remote Reader’s Handbook’ by Cassandra Mills. She’s got a whole chapter on phone shuffling techniques, basically how to make sure your client can hear the cards through the phone. The sound actually becomes part of the reading.
Phone readings work better for me honestly.
In-person energy can be too much sometimes. Not having to deal with eye contact or managing my nerves means I can really focus on what the cards are saying. There’s something about the distance that helps, like the phone creates this safe space where intuitive stuff flows easier.
Just the voice and the cards, none of the face-to-face pressure.
Phone readings seemed weird to me at first. Couldn’t wrap my head around doing tarot without being in the same room.
Then I did one with my camera broken and it worked just as well as in-person. The energy connection was totally there. I think what makes it work is when both people are really present and ready to dig into what the cards are saying.
Doesn’t matter if you’re in sweats or whatever, it’s about showing up mentally.
Doing phone readings, I didn’t realize how tricky it would be to convey the rich burgundy shadows in the Nine of Pentacles or the twilight blue in the Moon card when clients can’t see them.
I started a color journal to jot down descriptions like ‘the golden warmth of the Sun card’ or ‘the deep green of the Knight of Pentacles.’ It helps me paint word pictures that resonate emotionally.
Sometimes, I ask them to close their eyes and imagine the colors, and it turns into a nice meditative moment.
Something cool happens when clients can’t see you during shadow work readings, they open up way more. It’s like those old confessional booths.
People feel safer exploring the heavy stuff when they’re at home, maybe curled up with their cat. Those Tower moments and Death card revelations?
Much easier to face from your couch.
I like thinking of tarot connections as tuning into a radio frequency.
Started doing phone readings with this mindset and it really helps. The energy flows through intention and resonance, not physical closeness. Kind of like magnets pulling toward each other without touching (same principle. The cards actually showed me this themselves.
Three of Wands kept coming up in my distance readings, which felt like a reminder that meaningful connections don’t need physical boundaries.
Doing phone readings felt like using the same deck with a new twist.
The connection is as strong over the phone as it is in person. It’s a bit like how Victorian tarot readers switched from parlor readings to telegraph sessions during the spiritualist movement.
Without visual hints, my intuition sharpened, and I relied more on the cards and the caller’s voice vibes.
wait do people actually not cleanse their phones? the energetic buildup is real. i just wave some sage over mine real quick between readings
I learned the hard way that phone readings and noisy places don’t mix.
I was doing a reading for someone, and the background noise was terrible, I couldn’t concentrate on the cards or hear the client properly. The colors in the spread were really bright that day, too. The Sun card was practically glowing, but all the interruptions kept breaking my concentration. I’d see something important in the cards, then lose it when another noise cut through.
By the en,d I wasn’t sure if I was reading the spiritual messages right or just getting confused by all the distractions. The client was trying to explain their situation but I kept missing parts. Now I always make sure I’m somewhere quiet for phone readings. Need to hear both the client and see what the cards are saying without any interference.
Living in a rural area, phone readings are basically the norm here.
People aren’t driving 2+ hours for an in-person session. Before starting, I have clients take some deep breaths and ground themselves. We usually share a quiet moment to connect our energy it’s something a bunch of readers in my area do now. Some people visualize roots going into the earth or hold a stone during the call.
Works really well for keeping that connection strong even over the phone.
Phone readings feel special. I started putting clear quartz by my phone.
Sounds weird, but it really does help with the energy connection. You’d think not seeing someone would make it harder, but I’ve tuned in better to their voice and breathing patterns. The cards speak up more when you can’t rely on body language. Had this one reading where the connection was garbage, person was three time zones away, and I could barely make out what they were saying.
Ended up being the most accurate reading I’ve ever done. Every card was exactly what they needed. These days I shuffle three extra times for phone clients (my little ritual) and lots of them like it better than in-person. They open up more when they’re not sitting across from someone.
Getting tarot readings through written messages from my reader across the world has been amazing.
Each reading feels really personal, like getting a letter from a good friend. The cards speak just as clearly through his words as they would if we were face to face. It’s pretty cool how distance doesn’t affect the power of his readings at all.
Did my first phone reading last week. Couldn’t see their hands, obviously, so I started picking up on their breathing instead.
You can actually hear when a card hits them, their breath just changes. Swords especially seem to do it. Now I’m having clients shuffle their own deck while I shuffle mine here. The cards that come up are weirdly aligned and already got three more phone readings booked. Might just switch to this completely.
Visual cues have always been a big part of my readings.
Like with the Queen of Pentacles - seeing someone’s age completely changes the interpretation. Young person? Probably picking up daughter vibes. Older? More likely mother energy.
I’ve been wondering if working without visuals could open up my intuition more. No visual info means no unconscious bias creeping into the reading.
Does anyone else feel like phone readings create a deeper connection? Without the visual stuff, you can really zero in on the voice and energy. Am I just the weird one here?
When I’m reading for someone over the phone, I find myself picking up on their energy way more clearly. Plus, when you’re on the other side getting a reading, and let’s be real, we all need one sometimes, it’s nice to just close your eyes and let the reader’s voice guide you.
