Questions to Ask the Tarot?

I’ve been stuck in a rut lately, pulling cards for the same old relationship and career stuff over and over again. Could anyone suggest some new questions to ask the Tarot?

Last week I tried asking my deck “What energy should I embody today?” and as the cards revealed, it opened up a whole new way of connecting with my practice. Would love to hear what unexpected or creative questions you all use to keep your readings fresh and meaningful!

One question that always helps me when I’m stuck in repetitive readings is asking ‘What message is the universe trying to send me right now?’

It gets me away from my usual concerns and lets different guidance come through. I find it works better when I let my intuition guide the interpretation instead of trying to force the cards to fit my current situation.

When my readings feel stuck, I ask, ‘What am I not seeing?’ It usually points out the blind spots that keep me looping the same topic. Ill also pull for ‘How can I make my space feel better?’ so Im looking at the environment instead of just myself. Thats all.

Good questions to explore. I usually go with stuff like ‘What does my future self need me to know?’ when I’m stuck. Sometimes I’ll ask about what needs healing, but that can get heavy depending on the day.

I use my deck to help decide what to make for dinner sometimes. When I’m just staring into the fridge with no ideas, I’ll pull a card. Cups usually mean I end up making soup or something comforting. Wands tend to push me toward spicy food. Anyone else do this with their cards?

When I ask the deck, ‘What am I wasting my energy on?’ it tends to call out the small leaks-stuff that keeps me circling the same old relationship and job questions. I patch what I can and let the rest sit. Sometimes it just hangs around.

I like to think of it as rotating the questions I’m working with. I keep a dedicated space for reading and make sure I’m not stuck on the same questions week after week. Every Sunday I go through and let go of questions that aren’t helping anymore, then write new ones with clearer focus. I track which questions actually help me move forward (like ‘What supports progress?’ works better than ‘How do I fix this?’). When the new moon comes around, I check in with myself about what kinds of questions I need for the month ahead.

Hmm, good question. I’ve found that the best readings happen when you ask about stuff that’s actually bugging you right now. Some questions that work well:

  • What do I need to focus on this week?

  • What am I not seeing about [specific situation]?

  • What’s blocking me from [goal]?

Or just pull a card for what you need to hear today. The vague ‘tell me about my love life’ questions usually give vague answers back.

I really like doing what I call ‘Open Channel spreads’ (basically just pulling cards without a specific question and seeing what comes up).

Sometimes the most important stuff shows up when you’re not looking for anything in particular. I’ve been using this for shadow work lately. The cards tend to bring up things I wasn’t thinking about consciously, which can be pretty useful.

The deck has a way of pointing out themes that need attention, especially the parts of yourself you don’t always want to look at.

I used to ask yes/no questions like ‘Will I get the job?’ but it never gave me much to work with.

Started asking stuff like ‘What should I know about this opportunity?’ instead. The cards seem to give more detailed answers when you ask open questions. Sometimes they point out things I hadn’t even thought about.

I sometimes ask my deck to tell me a story.

I’ll even start with Once upon a time and let the cards spin something that isn’t about my own life. Pull three cards and see what comes out.

I’m not expecting some Netflix script or something, I think the stories the cards tell are just an intuitive way for it to guide you on questions you don’t even know how to ask yet.

Hey, if you’re into daily tarot prompts, Lionharts on Tarot has been solid for me.

They post a new question each day of the month, so it’s easy to pop in and pull a card without overthinking. What I like is that the prompts often go off the usual track and get you looking at parts of a card you’d normally ignore.

Simple, but useful. Some days I just read and move on.

Here are questions I use a lot with tarot:

  • What do I need to focus on?’ - good for when things feel scattered

  • ‘What’s in my way?’ - helps identify blocks

  • ‘What am I ready to let go of?’ - useful when you feel stuck

  • For relationships, I ask ‘What does this person need?’

  • ‘What am I not seeing about myself?’ is another one I like.

And when making decisions, I pull for each option to see how they compare. Pinterest has loads of spreads if you get bored with the usual ones. What questions do you find helpful?

I’ve been working with these questions lately:

  • What’s blocking my path forward at this moment?

  • Which of my hidden gifts is the universe urging me to embrace?

  • What message do the cards have for me today?

  • When I’m torn between _______ and _______, which direction serves my highest good?

These have helped me get clearer readings when I’m stuck.

I was thinking about The Hermit when I saw your question. Got me thinking about some things you might want to ask yourself.

If you’re trying to figure yourself out:

  • What parts of me am I avoiding?

  • Which patterns keep showing up and why?

  • What am I pretending not to know?

  • How do I accept both my good and bad sides?

  • What would my wisest self tell me?

If you want to feel more powerful:

  • Where am I holding back?

  • What boundaries am I scared to set?

  • Where do I let other people run my life?

  • What would I try if I wasn’t afraid?

  • What excuses am I making?

For relationship stuff:

  • What old wounds need attention?

  • What do I keep doing in relationships that doesn’t work?

  • What does love actually mean to me?

  • Am I being the kind of person I’d want to date?

For work and money:

  • What am I good at that I’m not doing?

  • How can my job actually mean something to me?

  • What weird ideas about money did I inherit?

  • Where should I put my energy?

For feeling better physically:

  • What is my body trying to tell me?

  • What exhausts me that I could stop doing?

  • Where am I forcing things instead of letting them happen?

  • What actually makes me feel good?

For spiritual questions:

  • What do I think I’m supposed to be doing here?

  • How do I connect to whatever’s out there?

  • Can I trust that things happen when they’re supposed to?

Just some thoughts. Take what works, leave what doesn’t.

If you’re getting bored, maybe try moving past basic prompts and actually working on how you ask questions. Look at elemental dignities to break down the structure, figure out which suit shows up too much and which one needs more attention.

Then try a significator replacement. Pick a card that represents your current situation and ask the deck what card would replace it after you’ve made real changes.
