Tarot Card Case? Or How Do You Store Your Cards?

I really want to take care of my decks, but I feel like the cardboard box only lasts so long and doesn’t really treat them very well. I also don’t want to lose them or have them fall behind somewhere. Where do you store your Tarot cards? I’ve heard people talk about a Tarot card case but I’m not sure if they just meant the cardboard box it came in?

There are no hard-set rules on where to store them. I have seen someone post their custom wood-carved case, but there are also some much more budget-friendly choices:

Or if you want something more in one place (with a cool display section). You might have seen this one in YouTubers readings:

I’d love to see some other setups!

There’s also some advice on cleansing your deck (which I would do if you don’t have proper storage for them) and some people shared advice on storing their decks in this thread:

Oh, I feel you on the cardboard boxes. They’re so flimsy and start falling apart after a few weeks of use.

Lots of options beyond the original box. Many readers use fabric bags like drawstring pouches in cotton, velvet, silk, or leather, whatever vibes with you. The drawstring keeps things snug without denting cards like snaps or buttons can.

Some swear by silk to “clear the energy,” but I’ve used cotton and velvet for years with no difference. Just my take. Wrapping in a cloth or scarf is great too. Cut it about 30x30 inches and it doubles as a reading cloth. Fold, tie with ribbon. Pretty and practical.

For sturdier storage, wooden boxes are awesome at home (stackable and solid), but cheap ones can stain card edges from the finish. Line with felt or fabric first to avoid that headache.

Metal tins are lightweight and portable. They block dust/humidity better than bags.

I keep my daily deck on the coffee table under a quartz crystal, and the rest in velvet bags on a shelf. It just evolved that way.

Yeah, those cardboard boxes are disposable. Cards barely fit, and after sliding them in/out a bit, the lids flop and corners tear.

Options depend on how you use your cards.

For home/altar display, wooden boxes are great, hand-carved with Tree of Life or Celtic designs. Some have latches. Grab plain ones from craft stores to paint or decoupage yourself. For travel, metal tins are lighter and more protective. Tinplate ones fit standard decks (about 5x3") with themed art. Leather cases work too, with snaps or belt pouches so you can wear your deck.

Binders are niche: acid-free sleeves for each card. No shuffling, but perfect for collectors to avoid scratches/dust.

Skip plastic baggies. Trapped moisture leads to mold. Ruins your cards quickly.

I keep most in original boxes on a shelf (boring) and my reading deck in a velvet drawstring bag. It works.

Okay, the makeup bag idea for travel is brilliant. I get excited packing my decks into these little cosmetic pouches because they’re the perfect size and way cuter than a standard deck box. Just easy. Grab and go.

Has anyone else figured this out or am I late to it? Makeup bags are basically the ideal tarot storage solution, and nobody talks about this enough.

The crocheted pouch route is worth it. I made one for my deck after the cardboard box fell apart, and now it’s basically the only storage I reach for.

Tons of free patterns online, easy even with no experience (I had none). It fits perfectly, looks personal. I don’t worry about damage anymore.

It just lives on my shelf in the original cardboard box. Works fine.

I know that’s not the most protective way to store a deck, and I should probably do better at some point. But there’s something about keeping it in its original home that feels right to me. Sentimental maybe.

Does the job though.

Just an old cigar box. Nothing fancy, it holds my deck plus some dice and playing cards. It works at home or when I’m hauling everything to a party.

The cards have been giving me nonsense pulls lately anyway, so they can earn a nicer home when the readings start improving.

Bandanas. They’re great for wrapping decks.

My sister asked how I kept mine protected when I was teaching her to read, that’s how she picked it up too.

Found these vintage book boxes on Amazon. They’re tarot card sized, so they actually fit your deck, and they just look like old books on your shelf.

Accessible but decorative.

Some readers believe your storage choice affects the energy of your readings. Like keeping cards in silk supposedly keeps them ‘cleaner’ spiritually (whether you buy that or not).

It depends on whether you follow those traditions or just want something practical.

Okay so I give my cards a little ‘bedtime routine’ hehe. I shuffle, tap the deck 3 times, tuck them away. I also slip a note card inside with the deck name and upright/reversed keywords because I will forget otherwise (I have too many decks for my own good).

Keep them out of direct sunlight if they’re on a shelf. The colors fade fast.

Silk is underrated for this. It blocks stray energies and keeps your deck’s own vibe from getting muddied.

A simple silk pouch sized for your cards. Ties shut, slips in any bag.

Tuck a selenite stick alongside it. It cleanses passively over time, so you don’t have to clear the deck constantly. Readings come through sharper that way. I’ve been seeing these pouches on Etsy in moon prints lately…

Silica gel packets work well for this. Just toss one of those ‘do not eat’ ones into whatever you’re storing your deck in, especially if your place runs humid. Check your edges while you’re at it, because if they’re already getting fuzzy, a quick pass with a corner cutter stops the splitting from getting worse.
