Does anyone else have a period of time when it feels wrong to pick up their cards? I havent used mine for about a month, it sounds stupid but i feel guilty but also im just tired so i dont feel i would be using the right energy with them. Am i alone on this or not?
Taking a break from your cards when you’re tired is honoring your intuition. The cards will be there when your energy feels right again, and stepping away can strengthen your connection to them.
It’s funny you feel guilty for a whole month, cause I do the same thing and then wonder why the guilt stuck around longer than the tiredness. When I’m that drained the cards end up reflecting my own scattered thoughts back at me, so I just let them sit. Last time this happened I ended up dreaming about one card over and over until I finally picked the deck up again.
There’s something to be said for those quiet seasons when the cards just want to rest in their box. I’ve felt that pull too.
It could be plain exhaustion or that gentle guilt whispering you’re not bringing your best energy to the practice. Either way our intuition knows we need a break before our minds catch up.
The cards will wait.
Your intuition is protecting you from something. When I first started reading, I learned pretty quickly that the cards respond to whatever energy you bring them, forcing a reading when you’re depleted just gives you murky nonsense anyway.
Just how it works, in my experience.
My mentor always said the cards pick up on your state. When you’re wiped out they just start handing back flat answers. Tried forcing a few pulls once anyway. They echoed the fog right back at me instead of anything useful, so now I leave them alone until I feel steadier.
He also pointed out something about certain decks needing their own downtime, like they get heavy in your hands after a while. Not every deck, but some of them definitely do.
Rest is part of the practice, not a break from it. That wrong energy feeling might be the shadow work talking, your intuition asking you to face whatever’s making you tired instead of trying to divine your way out of it. You’re not alone in this. When you come back to the cards, the clarity will be there.
I wonder if the guilt is coming from the idea that a tarot practice has to be consistent to be valid. This month away from the cards is still part of your relationship with them, just in a quieter form.
One thing you could try is keeping a tarot journal without pulling cards. Write down which card your day felt like, or which card you’re avoiding lately and why. You could also just place a deck on your altar or bedside table for a few days without shuffling it, so there’s contact without pressure.
Sometimes the question isn’t “Why can’t I read?”, it’s what kind of tarot practice would support the energy you have right now.
Forcing it part is where things go sideways. When your energy isn’t there, the messages get muddy. That’s really the only actual problem here.
Everything else is just knowing yourself. You recognize when you’re not in the right headspace and notice how Rider-Waite feels different than something like the Wild Unknown when you’re already running on empty. It’s the same logic as picking a gentler deck for shadow work versus a celebration reading. You match the tool to the moment.
Taking a break is the more responsible move anyway.
You can tell when your energy isn’t right for the cards. That tired, guilty feeling is your intuition protecting the reading. No need to force it. Just wait until you’re recharged.
Use your cards anywhere, whenever the energy feels right. Don’t force a reading when you’re running on empty, though. Give yourself permission to rest until you feel called back to the deck.
Honestly, the thing that saved me during my last dry spell was just letting them rest. Wrap your deck in a dark cloth, tuck a small piece of selenite in there (a bay leaf works too, I’ve done both) and stash it somewhere quiet. A drawer you never open, that kind of place.
It signals to yourself that they’re resting rather than being neglected. That took the guilt off for me, and the guilt was the actual block the whole time.
When you feel ready again, do a quick cleansing shuffle before your first pull. I knock on the deck three times.
When you say it feels like you wouldn’t be using the right energy, do you mean emotionally drained or mentally foggy, or does the deck itself feel closed off? I handle those differently.
If I’m in Four of Swords mode, I pair the deck with amethyst and don’t read at all. Hermit energy is different. I’ll sit with smoky quartz and pull just one card for reflection rather than prediction. If the guilt feels more like Eight of Swords, black tourmaline can help separate “I should read” from “I actually want to read.”
I don’t force readings when I’m exhausted. But I’ll sometimes choose a card intentionally, like Temperance with clear quartz, and just let it sit on my desk as a quiet anchor for the week. No pulls, no spreads, just presence.
What deck are you feeling this with? Is it all your cards or one specific deck?
If you’ve been tired for a whole month, I’d check in with your body and life before worrying about the cards. Sometimes it’s better not to read when you’re sleep-deprived or stretched too thin. Tarot can open things up when you actually need rest.
You might reconnect without doing a reading. Hold the deck, say hello, shuffle once, and put it back. No pressure to receive messages until you feel steadier.
Honestly, over coffee I’d say tarot practice has seasons. A quiet month can just be winter.
Let the deck hibernate.
lol my decks are side-eyeing me from the shelf right now. “you have 14 of us and still won’t shuffle?”
Break time is valid though… the cards aren’t going anywhere
I had almost the exact same thing happen after a stretch where I was doing too many readings for friends, and every time I looked at my deck I felt this weird mix of guilt and resistance.
What helped me was going to a local tarot reading circle, not to read for anyone, just to sit in and listen while others pulled cards and talked through the symbolism. After about three weeks I started feeling better about it, I was just burned out from feeling like every pull had to be meaningful or accurate.
If you have any tarot meetup groups near you, even online ones, it can help to be around the practice without forcing yourself to perform it.
