Money questions tend to arrive loaded with shame or panic, which makes them hard to look at clearly. I’m sometimes a little wary of doing them and it took quite a while to figure out the spread that I could use consistently.
This spread strips that away and shows you where you actually stand and what you can do about it. I use it when I feel stuck around money but can’t tell whether the problem is the numbers themselves… or some money story I picked up years ago.
The Spread Layout
- The Ledger: Your real financial situation right now, underneath whatever story you tell yourself about it.
- The Root: Where your money beliefs come from, usually older than you’d expect.
- The Leak: Where your resources quietly drain away.
- The Seed: An opportunity worth planting, whether that’s a new income stream or a smarter habit.
- The Wall: The fear or obstacle blocking your sense of security.
- The Lantern: The practical move the cards are pointing you toward.
- The Vault: What you can build if you hold the course.
Important Cards for a Financial Reading
Every card earns its place in this spread, but a few of these can shape how you read everything around them.
Every card is important in every spread - but there are some I would especially watch out for here.
Ace of Pentacles: A genuine opening. New income or seed money landing somewhere unexpected. When it shows up in The Seed or The Vault, pay close attention.
Four of Pentacles: You’re holding too tight. This is security through control, which can curdle into hoarding or a fear of spending on things that actually matter.
Wheel of Fortune: Money runs in cycles and yours is turning. Good fortune if you’ve laid the groundwork, or a push to save if you’ve been riding a high.
Ten of Pentacles: The long game paying off. Stability and the kind of wealth that outlasts you. This is the card of building something solid rather than chasing a quick win.
Of course, specific decks have specific cards for wealth or financial messages too. Cartomancy has the Ten of Diamonds and I think any deck with a gold foil looks good for financial abundance questions.
Timing & Preparation
This is a great spread during the waxing moon when you’re building toward something, or the new moon if you’re starting fresh after a rough patch. For the day, Thursday carries Jupiter’s expansive, abundant energy, which suits money work nicely.
Before shuffling, hold a coin or a bill, or whatever object connects you to the feeling of being provided for. A green or gold candle helps set the tone if you like working with one. Take a few slow breaths and get honest about what you’re really asking, since vague questions give vague answers.
How to Read the Spread Together
Watch the balance of suits.
A pile of Pentacles confirms the reading is squarely about material matters and practical steps. Lots of Cups suggest your emotions are steering financial decisions more than logic. If Swords stack up, it often points to anxiety or overthinking, or a money problem that’s really a communication problem in disguise.
Reversals here usually mean blocked flow, or inner work you need to do before the outer situation shifts.
Read The Leak and The Wall side by side. Together they tend to name the one thing you’ve been avoiding.
Deck Recommendations
Rider-Waite-Smith works well because the Pentacles suit reads cleanly for money matters, with imagery that spells out the material themes.
Thoth Tarot is strong on the elemental and structural side of finances. It’s good when you want the mechanics underneath a situation.
The Wild Unknown feels earthy and grounded, which helps keep a money reading honest instead of anxious.
What does money look like in your readings? Is there a card that turns up every single time you ask about finances?
