I’ve been searching everywhere for a Star Wars tarot deck and coming up empty.
Disney has licensed Star Wars for literally everything (waffle makers, yoga mats, you name it), but somehow not tarot cards? With all the archetypes, mysticism, and destiny themes in SW, it seems like such an obvious match. Does anyone know if there’s ever been one, even unofficially?
Deepen Your Tarot Practice Beyond the Cards
Finding meaningful tarot discussions and authentic guidance can be surprisingly difficult. Discover a space where your questions are welcomed and your intuitive growth is celebrated: Start Your Journey
Aaah yeah. I had to make my own buuut I did find a few things (I went looking just in case there was one.) Most are home made and Disney seems pretty quick at stomping out people trying to sell a full deck (which is a shame).
But I do have some suggestions. The closest thing would be the Star Wars affirmation cards, just use them like you would an oracle deck with some intuition.
I found the kickstarter for ‘The Tarot Strikes Back’ a coloring book that puts a Star Wars spin on the Major Arcana. The Millennium Falcon as The Sun works, and The Emperor as Darth Vader makes sense. It’s a coloring book. The 22 Major Arcana illustrations have a clear Star Wars feel. Might be useful as reference for a DIY deck.
May 4th is your best bet for finding Star Wars-inspired decks. A lot of indie artists time their releases for that date, especially the limited runs. The big conventions are worth checking too, Celebration, NYCC, SDCC. Artists often save their best stuff for those events. Halloween shops can be a surprise source. They start stocking fandom decks around late September/early October. I’ve found some decent ones mixed in with the costume stuff.
I don’t think there is an official deck because Disney won’t allow it.
I’m building my own Star Wars deck. Started because I had these weird dreams about doing readings under twin suns.
Here’s how I set up the suits:
Wands: pilots and starships (momentum),
Swords: lightsabers and hard truths,
Cups: Force stuff and bonds,
Pentacles: mechanics, credits, physical things.
Court cards are Padawan/Knight/Master/Council. Put Aurebesh lettering around the edges. I’ve been testing with a Binary Sunset spread, Light path, Shadow path, Balance. Works well with the prototypes. Can’t decide if I want Original Trilogy grit or High Republic polish for the artwork though.
Yoda hiding out on Dagobah as the wise teacher, that’s The Hermit for sure. Obi-Wan letting Vader strike him down matches The Hanged Man’s sacrifice theme. Palpatine as The Devil makes sense too, considering how he corrupts everyone around him.
You could probably map the whole Force experience onto the major arcana cards, with different characters at different points along the way.
Been doodling a SW tarot. The Lovers kept bugging me, so I reworked it as Brothers for Anakin and Obi-Wan. Their push-pull and the choices between duty and attachment fit the card better than any on-screen romance.
Luke goes to The Sun, and I read Order 66 as Judgement, like a harsh wakeup call. With the licensing stuff, an official deck seems unlikely, so homebrew versions make more sense. Curious who you’d cast as the High Priestess.
Hmm are you okay with using a digital deck? I like Tarot apps in general, but you’ll also find a lot of digital Star Wars decks, but Disney won’t be chasing them.
Honestly, I’m surprised there isn’t more quality work for this theme. Something more inspired than Darth Vader as Death in a random pop culture deck.
Most of what I’ve found has been pretty uninspired, which is making me think maybe creating my own deck. I’ve been reading tarot for years and incorporate it into my Wicca practice.
What I’m after is something that really captures the mythology in both meanings and artwork. The imagery needs to connect authentically. Too many themed decks just lazily match characters to Major Arcana cards, like putting Darth Vader on Death and calling it done. You need the source material’s symbolism woven throughout.
Sagittarius here, always hunting for new decks. I ran into @starwarstarot on Instagram while Mercury was in retrograde. There’s another deck brewing on Elithien’s Tumblr. The art is solid, and the Force + traditional tarot pairing makes sense to me. Venus-in, Libra brain is pleased; Jupiter brain is curious. Waiting kind of sucks.
Tarot Quarterly had a piece in 2019 about fan decks and copyright that might help.
The author checked out Lucasfilm’s stance on modified works - they seem okay with personal projects but not mass production. Just keep it non-commercial if you make one.
Heads up, your fandom tarot deck might have the suits all wrong. I’ve seen Mandalorian decks that completely flip the usual correspondences. The thing with fandom decks is they assign suits however they want. Like, lightsabers could be Swords in one deck and Wands in another.
Always check what system they’re using. Also, if the deck has those fancy alien language titles and bare-bones pip cards, you’ll spend forever just figuring out what card you pulled.
Made my first deck using anime art and had to figure out the printing stuff myself. For anyone wanting to do Star Wars cards - MakePlayingCards worked well for me. Get the linen finish if you want them to feel like regular tarot cards.
You need to add 3mm bleed around your artwork and save at 300dpi. Lower resolution looks bad when printed.
