Potential Love Tarot Spread (Whether Something Could Actually Grow)

The tricky part of early attraction or a crush is that you can’t tell the difference between a real opening and a story you’ve built out of two good conversations. This spread is for that stage, when there’s a spark of something… but nothing’s been decided and you want to know if it has anywhere to go.

It won’t just hand you a yes or no. We’re doing real Tarot work here, so it’s showing you what you’re actually working with and whether the potential is real or mostly in your head.

I use this one when someone new has caught a querant’s attention or an old friendship has started to feel like it might be turning into something. It focuses on the connection itself and not a person’s hidden feelings. It checks whether the connection has the raw material to become real and true love, or if it’s just a nice moment that simply stays a moment.

The Spread Layout

  1. Where It Stands Now. The honest current state of the connection, stripped of what you’re hoping it becomes. Just what’s actually there today.

  2. What You’re Bringing. Your own readiness and what you’re putting in, including whether you’re chasing a feeling or an actual person.

  3. What They’re Bringing. Their level of interest and investment as it stands, separate from your read on it.

  4. The Real Spark. Whether there’s genuine chemistry underneath, or mostly circumstance and good timing doing the work.

  5. What’s In the Way. The practical or emotional thing slowing it down, from bad timing to old caution on either side.

  6. What Would Feed It. The concrete move or shift that gives this a chance to grow instead of fizzling out.

  7. Where It Could Go. The realistic direction if things carry on the way they are now.

Important Cards for Potential Love

Every card you pull is doing a job, but a handful of these tilt the whole reading and tell you which way to read the rest.

Ace of Cups is the clearest sign the potential is real. It’s the seed of a feeling before it has taken any shape, a genuine emotional opening, not a rerun of something old. Landing in The Real Spark or Where It Could Go, it says there’s actually something here to grow.

Page of Cups is sweeter and more tentative, a feeling that’s only just started and hasn’t tested itself yet. Promising but young, so read it as a beginning that still needs time, not a settled thing.

Seven of Cups is the one I watch for most, because it’s how imagination gets mistaken for connection. Plenty of appeal on the surface, not much you can pin down. If it turns up around What You’re Bringing, some of this potential may be living in your head more than in the room.

The Star is quiet, patient hope. It points to a slow-growing possibility worth watering, the kind that rewards you for not forcing it. Steady, not dramatic, and easy to overlook if you’re holding out for fireworks.

How to Read the Spread Together

Watch for clumps of suits forming together in sections of the spread.

A run of Cups confirms real feeling is forming and the potential is emotional, not just physical. When Wands show up they point to attraction and momentum, the pull that gets things moving even before the depth is proven.

Swords usually mean you’re thinking about this more than living it, with over-analysis on your side or theirs. Pentacles slow the reading toward something steady, love built by showing up week after week, not one big spark.

Reversals here tend to mean the potential is blocked or simply not ready, energy that hasn’t found its way out yet. Read a reversal as “too soon” far more often than “never.”

Read What’s In the Way next to What Would Feed It. Side by side they usually name the single thing that decides whether this grows or stalls.

If the unspoken side is where you’re stuck, the crush spread looks into feelings nobody’s said out loud yet. Or (if you think this might be the one) I’ve just posted my soulmate tarot layout too - just be honest with yourself on that one.

Timing & Preparation for The Reading

I like pulling this on a waxing moon, when the theme is something building toward fullness, or a new moon if the connection itself is brand new. Friday suits it too, since it carries Venus’s energy for anything to do with love.

Before you shuffle, get honest about the question. The cards read the difference between “Could this become something,” which is a fair ask, and “make it be him.”

Light a candle if that settles you (pink or pale green works nicely for growth and affection). Take a few slow breaths and picture the person as they actually are, not the polished version you replay when you’re bored.

Deck Recommendations

The Rider-Waite-Smith earns its spot again here because the Cups imagery reads cleanly for feelings that are still forming, and the Aces and Pages show up plainly enough that you won’t second-guess them.

For a reading this tentative, I also reach for a warmer, softer deck that catches the early shades instead of grand declarations. Most of the newer illustrated decks handle this well; the thread on modern decks has plenty of options if you want something with gentler art.

A storytelling deck helps when you care about the why behind the potential and not only whether it exists.

I love this, thank you!

I do a lot of these types of readings for people and I’ve copied your layout into my BiS to use more. I love how your layouts spell everything out with detail, without being crazy confusing tree of life spread.

omg I’m SO doing this tonight!

Quick question tho, do you shuffle differently for potential love vs regular love readings? I’ve been holding the deck to my heart for a min before shuffling and it feels like the pulls are way more honest lol. Also never thought about the Seven of Cups thing before, that’s kinda called me out because I 100% build stories after two coffee dates

This spread reminds me of a season when I was praying and pulling cards side by side, asking whether a connection with someone from my church group was worth pursuing. I kept getting the Two of Cups paired with Temperance. It lined up with what I felt in prayer: patience, not pursuit.

We ended up together two years later after both of us finished separate healing seasons.

I used almost this exact structure for a client once. She had intense chemistry with a coworker, with the key cards being the Knight of Wands in The Real Spark and Four of Pentacles in What They’re Bringing, with Six of Pentacles in What Would Feed It. Real attraction there. It only grew when she stopped overgiving and let him meet her halfway.

What helped most was reading Where It Stands Now very literally. The cards showed flirtation and curiosity, not commitment yet. Three months later they were dating, but only after she slowed down and let the connection prove itself through consistent actions.

Page of Cups? Baby-crush energy, every time. Maybe it’s the Pisces in me.

I would also cross-check against Venus/Mars transits though, especially when the attraction feels like it came out of nowhere and got loud fast… those transits tend to explain a lot.

If The Lovers shows up in Where It Stands Now, it’s more of a choice point than a confirmation. The Hierophant in What’s In The Way often flags external expectations from family, faith, or community rather than the connection itself being wrong. A High Priestess in What They’re Bringing usually means their interest is real but veiled. Quiet doesn’t mean absent.

When you use this spread, ask yourself what kind of evidence you’d accept from the cards before you pull. That keeps you from bending every card into a love story afterward. Are you looking for mutual action, emotional openness, better timing, or just proof that the chemistry is not imagined?

I’d also journal the exact cards for where it stands now and what’s in the way, then revisit them after one or two real interactions with the person, along with where it could go. The spread can teach you whether you feel calmer and more yourself around this connection.

The Labyrinthos Finding Love spread is one of my favorites for this kind of thing. It covers your readiness, what characteristics to look for in a lover, how you’ll actually meet, what the relationship vibe would be, and the overall potential. It has five positions that flow together better than trying to piece together random pulls.

The relationship characteristics question is clutch when you’re trying to figure out if something has legs or if you’re just projecting an entire romance onto someone who smiled at you twice.

Pulled this spread last night and the results were kind of wild. The Real Spark position is what got me, something about where it landed just threw me off.

Will update once things play out I guess.

Early love often reveals itself through posture before it shows up in the major arcana and I think with a spread like this you’ll almost always find a card that represents you and represents them - but they’ll show up in whatever position makes sense for your message.

I’d also pay attention to the elemental balance between the first two positions.. Wands might call for courage and playful invitation, while Pentacles point to repeated real-world contact. Cups suggest emotional honesty, and Swords mean clarifying the story before it turns into something else entirely.

Tarot is your brutally honest friend. It won’t hand you a romance script. I’m so done with people expecting it to spoon-feed them a love story.

I keep a clear quartz on my deck to cut through my own wishful thinking. Sounds woo, I know. But it grounds me when I’m trying not to project. Your intuition in armor, whispering truths you already know.
